This position is primarily accountable for managing the credit union’s commercial relationships, heightened risk management practices, and supporting the credit union’s business objectives relating to commercial transactions, financial margin and non-interest income, an essential tie between operations, liquidity and risk management.
This position will be accountable for the development and administration of complex, niche, high-value commercial relationships, syndication loans, broker portfolios that exceed $200 million, including accountability for the competent management of the portfolios. Emphasis will be placed on coaching, leading, loan administration, sales, service, member advice and growth.
Working closely with the Vice President Business Banking, the individual will implement a proactive approach to sales and business development by cultivating a strong working relationship with the Business Solutions team, external financial institutions, large corporate organizations, local business owners, and members of the professional community.
This position is accountable, within established limits, for the analysis and approval/recommendation of syndicated deals and complex commercial credit applications generated by a team of Commercial Relationship Managers within the region or centre. He/she will be accountable for management of specific larger/senior credits within the unit. In conjunction with the Business Solutions team, this position will be accountable to source deposits in order mitigate liquidity risk.
Business Banking Development
- Manage external relationships with other credit unions and financial institutions as it relates to syndications, managing broker relationships and the management of large and complex credit facilities for Northern Alberta.
- Source deposits opportunities with the support of the Business Solutions team.
- Help to train, motivate and guide staff within your team to ensure high quality service is provided to members and branch employees and that the needs of the organization and the individuals are met in conjunction with the Regional Manager Business Banking
- Develop and maintain effective sales and marketing efforts to maximize Commercial Loan growth, Deposit growth and sales of peripheral products to help our members succeed in business.
- Provide proactive advice to our Business Members that offers tailored solutions to meet their financial needs.
- Maintain a high profile and professional image in the business and social communities personally and through subordinates.
- Ensure that personnel receive the appropriate training to develop the required levels of commercial lending.
- Develop and submit renewal applications, prepare consolidated information for reporting purposes to the Regional Manager Business Banking as required.
- Ensure negotiable and non-negotiable collateral security is obtained and maintained in accordance with the terms of authorized credits.
- Provide input to the Vice President Business Banking on the development of loan policies and procedures when required.
- Assist the Relationship Managers and other Team Leaders in providing advice to more junior staff members.
- Other duties as assigned.
Centralized Credit Service
- Assist in managing the teams lending and deposit activities including recommendation of rates, authorizing loans within prescribed lending authorities and recommending credit loan requests above those limits in conjunction with Regional Manager Business Banking.
- Direct subordinates in the structure, negotiations and submission of Credit applications, evaluating requests on the basis of policy, risk and profitability, ensuring reviews on commercial credits are performed as required by established lending guidelines.
- Ensure vigorous pursuit to collect problem commercial and agricultural loans.
- Ensure security procedures are maintained.
Human Resources Management
- Complete performance plans with Business Banking employees within your pod.
- Foster a positive/supportive Team relationship with Retail Branches in the area.
Experience:
- Demonstrated ability in all facets of credit granting and sales of Business Banking products over a seven to ten year period.
- Essential knowledge and skills include demonstrated business development skills, analytical abilities and a sound knowledge of portfolio management acquired through the administration of a business portfolio.
- Minimum of seven years of progressive lending, Commercial Banking, and Senior level management experience.
- Strong background in Business Banking, including marketing, business development underwriting and compliance.
- Experience working and developing relationships with members, potential members, influential community people and staff is required.
- Experience effectively leading a team.
Education and Training:
- University degree in a business discipline or sufficient experience in lieu of education.
Licenses/Certificates:
- Trade certificates or designations, etc.
Any other special requirements necessary to do the job:
Weekend or shift work, available to travel, etc.
The business may from time to time ask for branch and/or department support for special projects and/or areas experiencing staff shortages. All employees may be asked to volunteer to assist in areas of need during these times. These assignments could result in a change of hours, location, and/or travel.
