A member of a team of professional credit adjudicators that evaluate and approve commercial and agricultural credit applications generated by the Business Banking Centres, Regional Offices and Retail Branches. The position is accountable for ensuring that the approved applications meet acceptable risk requirements in accordance with prudent lending practices, corporate lending policy, as well as regulatory and legislative requirements.

The position requires a mix of technical and managerial/leadership skills. The technical requirements include advanced credit decisioning expertise to ensure that, working with account managers and supervisors, loans are properly structured to minimize the risks of default and loan losses. The managerial side requires the ability to mentor lending personnel in underwriting skills, techniques and negotiations. Strong communication skills are needed for interaction with Senior Managers, Regional Credit Mangers, and Vice Presidents Commercial Credit in respect of credit applications requiring approvals from those positions.

As part of the risk management team, this position is accountable for assessing loan portfolio risks and trends and maintaining credit quality by completing loan transaction reviews, monitoring of portfolio performance, recognizing emerging industry, macro-economic and political risks, training and guidance of commercial lenders, and maintenance/revision of Corporate Lending Policy and Guidelines.

Key Responsibility areas

Credit Approval Process

  • Adjudication of commercial and agricultural credit proposals where amounts requested exceed branch or regional office approval levels.
  • Incumbent approval levels: New Funds $ (to be determined); Renewal $ (to be determined).
  • Analysis of financial information, security valuations, terms and conditions of the credit request to ensure that approved applications are appropriately structured to minimize the risk of default and loss, while supporting corporate growth goals.
  • Identify viable alternatives or revisions to security, terms and conditions to maximize loan growth while minimizing the risk of default.
  • Recommend acceptable credit applications that require higher level authorization. Present and support the application to the required authorizing bodies (Director Commercial Credit, VP Commercial Credit, and SVP Credit).

Risk Management and Monitoring Loan Portfolio

  • Complete loan transaction reviews.
  • Maintain acceptable risk levels in the existing loan portfolio through monitoring of loan performance, underwriting practices and delinquency management practices.
  • Monitor macro-economic issues, regional factors and industry specific trends as it relates to the loan portfolio.
  • Provide portfolio performance/risk assessment summaries to senior management, along with recommendations for action, as required.
  • Provide support, guidance and direction to account managers regarding the administration of higher risk, delinquent and non-performing loans, in order to minimize risk of loss. This includes the review, on a regular basis, of impaired and delinquent loan situations and assessing and approving, within predetermined authority levels, collection action, or moving the account to the Special Loans Group.

Experience:

  • A minimum of 5 years commercial lending experience is required.
  • Working knowledge of consumer and residential mortgage lending practices and products.

Education and Training:

  • College level finance/accounting diploma or an equivalent level of knowledge acquired through experience.
  • Formal training in agricultural lending practices and financial analysis (i.e. Agricultural Lenders Workshops, Agricultural Business Analysis workshops) or an equivalent level of knowledge gained through experience.
